The Origins of East Midlands Housing

Housing Pioneers

EMH was established in 1946, when a small group of returning servicemen got together to try to address the shortage of affordable, good quality housing for working people.

The Association’s first development completed in 1948 at Thringstone, Leicestershire, provided 50 homes for coal-miners. These were swiftly followed by homes built in Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire within developments targeted at key workers rebuilding the country following the War.

Unlike other housing associations which employed building contractors, East Midlands Housing Association used its own building team with permanently employed operatives - forming a housing building co-operative, sufficiently versatile to carry out additional contracts in order to maintain work flow.

At the time, EMH was recognised nationally for its pioneering work in tackling the national shortage of housing.
