EMH's early years


In EMH’s early years, work undertaken included :

  • restoration of 5,000 houses suffering from the effects of mining subsidence
  • improvement and construction of dwellings for various local authorities
  • improvements and extensions to business and industrial premises
  • schools
  • colleges
  • a monastery 
  • cinema
  • day nursery
  • a church
  • police station 
  • a library


The Association commenced building houses for ‘owner-occupation’ in 1952 - the only housing association to do so - and completed over 2,000 for satisfied residents.

New Government funding was made available in 1961 enabling the association to embark on larger developments of rented homes in Ilkeston, Nottingham and Blaby - officially opened by Sir Keith Joseph MP, then Minister of Housing and Local Government.
